A group of alumni, mainly those who attended DeMatha in the late 1960's, will gather for lunch tomorrow at Ledo's in College Park at noon. The event, to no surprise, is being organized by Charlie Kenny '68. (Anyone is welcome, by the way).
Charlie is the President of the DeMatha Alumni Association and is a longtime officer of that organization. He is now a member of the school's Board of Directors. For 25 years, Charlie has served as the moderator for the school's very successful Mock Trial team. Every other year Charlie (along with Tim O'Brien '77) hold an Estate Planning Seminar for the school. Charlie's grandsons are graduates, as are several of his brothers, nephews, cousins, friends, and brother-in-law. Talk about a true Stag!
About a year ago, several of Charlie's classmates wanted to do something to honor him for his longtime service to the school (among other things). They decided to set up a Mock Trial "Chair" to raise money in Charlie's name with the funds to support the Mock Trial team long after Charlie has retired as moderator (like maybe 20 years from now :). Anyway, about a quarter of the funds required to set up this initiative have been received thus far and an effort continues to get this idea fully established. All donors will be recognized on a plaque that will be displayed in the Alumni Lounge.
Has Charlie helped you in some way down through the years? Have you been a member of the Mock Trial team? Are you a judge, attorney, or in the legal field in some capacity? If so, please consider supporting this effort! You can mail a check to the school, made payable to DeMatha (putting 'Charlie Kenny' in the reference section), and send to DeMatha Advancement 4313 Madison Street Hyattsville, MD 20781
. You can also give online by clicking here (putting 'Charlie Kenny' in the comments section): Donate Online
The plan is to unveil the plaque at the class of '68 Reunion on May 31, so, therefore, if you want your name on the plaque that evening, your donation must be in by May 3. (However, there will be room on the plaque for additional donations after that date).
Thank you so much for your consideration to help honor someone who has worked so tirelessly for DeMatha down through the years. One DeMatha!
PS: Yes, Charlie knows about this effort and, even if we tried to keep the secret above, we know he would find out anyway.
Speaking of longtime supporters, there will be a reception tonight at Ledo's in College Park for Deno Campbell '81, who, as we have mentioned before, is moving on to coach football at St. Frances. The event is from 5:30-8 and will be very casual (just like Deno off the field). You can pay as you go and beverage prices will be very affordable. This event is just a way for people to come together and wish Deno well in his future endeavors. The only constant in this life is change and this night will be a very positive one recognizing Deno for all he has done down through the years.
Of that, we looked it up. Deno was a student-athlete at DeMatha from 1977-81. He has coached football here from 1985-2017. As either a player or a coach, Deno was a part of 19 football championships and four baseball titles. His brother, Darin '85, was a part of one football championship and two baseball titles. Of course, Deno's deceased parents, Bernie and Hazel, volunteered at the school for over 30 years. Suffice to say, the Campbell family is one of the great DeMatha families.
We look forward to gathering with folks tonight.
