June 19, 2020
Dear DeMatha Community,
We wanted to let you know some of our thinking in broad brush-strokes regarding the opening of school year 2020-2021. All of this is tentative and, pending governmental decisions, could be altered.
Between July 15 and July 22 it is our hope to send to the entire community the exact plan for opening with a school calendar—even at that time, of course, things could change between then and the scheduled opening.
DeMatha has two task forces already working on plans for the fall: 1) a Facilities task force concerned with buildings, grounds, physical safety; and 2) an Online Learning task force. The Facilities Task Force is writing the protocols we will follow for cleaning, testing temperatures, regulating visitors, quarantining the ill, transporting students to practice and games, wearing personal protective equipment including gloves, masks, face shields, eating, traveling in the buildings, and anything related to our physical presence on campus and in the places we practice. We are using the CDC Guidelines and have trained personnel in contact tracing and doctors and public health officials on call.
The Online Learning Task Force is preparing guidelines in case we need to begin the year in an online environment and in case we need to go to an online environment during the semester. They have read more than 400 responses to surveys we have sent out as well as articles and white papers that assess online learning. They are also trying to help make plans that respect the different disciplines and how such online work might proceed across departments. In addition, they are working on ways to build and maintain relationships in an online environment.
We will be adding a third task force on Student Life in the next week or so to formulate plans for student activities, campus ministry, clubs and organizations, and social gatherings that are all integral to a complete education.
Please look for information to come out throughout the summer but specifically around July 22 when we will offer as complete a picture as we can of the opening of the year.
