Christian Service Requirements by Grade Level: (For the 2020-2021 school year ONLY)

The requirements listed below were established with COVID-19 concerns and limitations in mind. Please contact Mrs. Bright if you have questions. 

Virtual Service Options for 2020-2021

• Freshmen year- Bettering Our Communities: 5 hours total
  • must work with a non-profit organization or a non-relative individual
  • cannot be a fundraiser for you or your organization.
  • Acceptable options include churches, youth athletic clubs, elementary schools, food warehouses, meal kitchens, assisting neighbors or those severely affected by COVID-19, etc.
  • Reminder: DeMatha summer athletic camps do not count for service hours.
  • A List of Freshmen Service Options
• Sophomore year- Meeting Basic Needs: 10 hours total
  • must work with a non-profit organization 
  • Acceptable options include churches, soup kitchens, schools, food warehouses, meal kitchens, assisting neighbors or those severely affected by COVID-19, etc.
  • Reminder: DeMatha summer athletic camps do not count for service hours.
  • A List of Sophomore Service Options
• Junior year-Encountering Christ in the Poor and Marginalized: 20 hours total
  • must be with non-profit organizations that serve the needs of those who are marginalized or experiencing hardships/burdens. It does not need to be direct contact. Must choose an organization that serves one of the following groups:
    • Elderly, Special-needs, Veterans, Sick, Hungry, Homeless or those with inadequate housing, Refugee/Immigrant
  • Reminder: DeMatha summer athletic camps do not count for service hours.
  • A List of Junior Service Options
• Senior year: Men of Faith and Action: 20 hours total. Service hours due 5/1/21.
  • must be with non-profit organizations that serve the needs of those who are marginalized or experiencing hardships/burdens.  It does not need to be direct contact. Must choose an organization that serves one of the following groups:
    • Elderly, Special-needs, Veterans, Sick, Hungry, Homeless or those with inadequate housing, Refugee/Immigrant

Senior Service Reflection: Seniors must complete the senior reflection paper once they are finished with their senior service hours. All seniors are required to turn the senior service reflection by May 1 senior year to the Director of Christian Service. Seniors who have completed all hours by May 1, 2021 have the option of turning in a written reflection OR doing a personal service interview with a faculty member. Details for both will be given during the year. The packets are available on the main page.

Note: If a student’s hour requirement is not completed by 5/21/21 the student will be assigned penalty hours and students will have until the end of summer school to complete and submit their required hours for that grade level. If the summer hours are not submitted by the appointed date, students will be removed from classes for the upcoming school year and will not be allowed to start school until all hours from the previous year are completed and submitted

Must choose an organization that serves one of the following groups : Elderly, Special-needs, Veterans, Sick, Hungry, Homeless or those with inadequate housing, Refugee/Immigrant
Senior	20	Hours due at the end of the month in which they were completed   Senior hours due: May 1, 2021	Same as junior requirement; seniors may work with the same organization as junior year.
Senior Reflection Paper**	_______	May 20, 2021	Graduation requirement: may be written or in the form of an interview (if student qualifies)

**ABSENCE IS NOT AN EXCUSE FOR MISSING THE SENIOR PAPER/INTERVIEW DEADLINE. Please email paper or turn in a hard copy to the Director of Christian Service by the appointed date.
