OVERVIEW
The DeMatha soccer team is a perennial contender for the WCAC championship. And under second-year head coach Dan Gill, a new era is dawning in Hyattsville.
Gill began leading the Stags in 2025 after a successful coaching career at his alma mater, Benedictine College Prep in Richmond, Va. He led his final Cadets team (2024) to a 12-7-2 record. His first squad at DeMatha got off to a slow start before reeling off five straight victories.
During his playing days, Gill was a midfielder for two Division I universities, Longwood and Mount St. Mary’s.
Gill steps into a program that was 24-o in 2010, and the following year went 20-0 and won a national championship. That 2011 squad was recently inducted into the DeMatha Hall of Fame. More recently, the 2024 Stags advanced to the WCAC title game.
DeMatha regularly graduates players to top college teams and the pros. Justin Gielen ’18, as a freshman, helped lead Maryland to the 2018 NCAA Division I championship. Stags assistant coach Alexio Rodriguez ’19 played professionally in Germany and New Zealand. Former head coach Andrew Quinn ’05 was a goalie at Notre Dame and played for D.C. United.
DeMatha reloads with new talent each season to remain among the area’s top teams. Look for the Stags, under coach Gill, to continue competing for championships.

Dan Gill, who in 2026 enters his second season at the helm of the DeMatha soccer program, has dedicated his career to excellence in education, leadership and athletics.
Gill grew up in Richmond, Va., and attended Benedictine College Preparatory, where he distinguished himself as a three-sport athlete. He played Division I soccer at Mount St. Mary’s and Longwood University. He graduated from Longwood with a degree in history.
He later earned a master’s in teaching and returned to his high school alma mater, where he taught and coached for 10 years. During his tenure, he transformed the Cadets from a perennial underperformer into one of the top-ranked teams in Virginia. His final squad (2024) finished 12-7-2.
Gill achieved similar success by elevating the Saint Gertrude girls soccer program to statewide prominence. He aims to keep the Stags among the area’s elite teams.
