DeMatha punctuated another great season in 2024 by winning the WCAC Championships. Since 1991, the Stags have won 18 conference titles, including four of the past five.

Anthony Waterman ’24 earned All-America honors twice with two second-place performances in the 110-meter hurdles. At the Brooks PR Invitational in Renton, Wash., his time of 13.51 seconds was a personal best and a new Maryland state record.

The DeMatha track and field program began with a JV team in 1961. It began to rev up in the 1980s under the leadership of Dick Messier. Several of its 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams have been nationally ranked, and each year the Stags travel to the Penn Relays to compete against the best track and field athletes in the country.

The program’s proudest moment may have come in the 1996 Olympics when Derek Mills ’90 won a gold medal as part of the U.S. 4x400 relay team. Caleb Dean ’19 concluded his career at Texas Tech in 2023-24 with two national championships and helped the Red Raiders win the NCAA indoor title. He was named Men’s National Track Athlete of the Year.

DeMatha owes a huge debt of gratitude to Anthony Bryant, who guided the track team for 19 years and was honored by several organizations for his coaching ability. Buddy Crutchfield led the squad from 2017-24 and won four WCAC championships. The Head Coach for the Stags is Nazell Alston.
