The success of the DeMatha wrestling program can largely be attributed to legendary coach Dick Messier. During his 35 years (1979-2014) at the helm, he guided the Stags to a record of 529-107-6 (.824 winning percentage). His teams won 25 conference titles and seven National Prep Wrestling Championships.
DeMatha is coming off one of its finest seasons in recent memory. The 2025-26 Stags were 15-4 in the regular season, including an 8-1 mark in the WCAC. Senior Cameron Black (pictured) won the heavyweight division of the Maryland Independent Schools State Championship. He is DeMatha's first state wrestling champion since 2017. His triumph landed him a spot in National Preps, where he went 4-2 and finished 12th.
Lorenzo Lopez, who served as an assistant coach the past two seasons, was elevated to head coach in February 2026. He replaces Dylan Devine '12, who will remain with the program as director of operations. Lorenzo, who wrestled at Landon High School, has DeMatha family ties through his father, Larry '88, and brother, Larry '14.
