Researchers will be equipped to perform the following:

 

  1. Review Topics: 
    • With your partner, examine each debate topic, noting how it connects to Animal Farm and identifying possible arguments.
  2. Select a Topic: 
    • Choose one topic for your debate.
  3. Prepare Arguments: 
    • Develop both an affirmative (pro) and a negative (con) argument for your chosen topic.
  4. Research Thoroughly: 
    • Use the provided links and scheduled library time to gather credible evidence supporting both sides of your argument.
  5. Cite Sources: 
    • Keep track of all your sources and follow the required citation format.
  6. Draft Your Speech: 
    • Organize your arguments and evidence into a clear, structured speech.

Instructions on topic search:

 

  1. Go to SIRS Issues Researcher database
  2. Select one of the Leading Issues
    1. All Leading Issues
    2. View as 'list'
  3. Observe the viewpoints (1 & 2) and consider these questions for debate
  4. Look at the Critical Questions section below viewpoints
  5. Look just below the 'viewpoints' to  select "Find more sources for ________"
  6. Find and review results from the list and consider performing additional searches, if necessary

How to choose from a list of potential sources:

  • If result list is 'too large' narrow list by date or source type
  • Look for keywords (or phrases) of interest in the title
  • Read select abstracts or 'summaries' of chosen articles

 

 

ISSUES RESEARCHER EXAMPLE:  May select 'VIEW AS' mode for text list of topics

Topic choice: Gender Pay Gap (also work/family suggestion)

Example 2:

Topic choice: Should the Pledge of Allegiance be mandatory in schools?   (Pledge of Allegiance timeline - how many times changed? Why?)
