Join me in congratulating the top 16 teams for Mock Trial 2012. These teams will go on to compete at the court house in Upper Marlboro next week. It was a close competition for all and all coaches and teams should be applauded for their outstanding effort this year.

February 16, 2012: DeMatha’s Mock Trial team is 3-0, beating Potomac by a score of 45-44 yesterday. Sophomore Andrew Rust, a last minute sub for a teammate who suffered a pretrial concussion, was Attorney of the Match, and freshman Jeremy Tuthill was Witness of the Match. Last week, the team defeated Cultural Academy, 55-51. Andrew Rust was also named the Attorney of the Match for that competition, and sophomore AJ Read was named Witness of the Match
2011 Competitions
State Playoff April 5: DeMatha’s Mock Trial Team advanced to the Maryland State playoff round on Tuesday, April 5, in Towson. Although they lost to Bishop Walsh, they were one of the top 8 teams (out of 136) in the entire state for the 2010-2011 school year. A circuit court judge and two attorneys presided over the final match. Congratulations to the members of the Mock Trial Team, moderator John McConnell and attorney advisor Charlie Kenny '68 on an exceptional year. After the match, attorney Kenny wrote, “All DeMatha students are great but those on the Mock Trial team were truly exceptional.”
April 7 - 7th Circuit Final: DeMatha’s Mock Trial team lost to an excellent St. Mary's Ryken team, 57-55, in a close match on Tuesday. Matt Maxwell was DeMatha’s attorney for the match and Gordon Wilford was the DeMatha witness for the match. Matt received recognition as the best overall defense attorney for the entire competition for the 7th Judicial Circuit, besting the student attorneys from St. Mary's, Prince George’s, Charles and Calvert counties. This year the top two teams, St. Mary's and DeMatha, advance to compete at the next level the first week in April.
March 15 Semi-Final: DeMatha’s Mock Trial Team prevailed over Thomas Stone (Charles County) on Tuesday, 54-51. The team is now positioned to go against St. Mary's Ryken.
In Tuesday’s match, Circuit Court Judge Pearson selected Gordon Wilford as the best attorney and Brian DeShong was selected best attorney by the coach of Thomas Stone. Both selected Cameron Pritchett, playing the role of the police officer, as the best witness.
The team will play the role of defense next Tuesday, March 22, at 4 PM at the Circuit Court for Prince George's County in Upper Marlboro.
Family and friends are encouraged to attend. If anyone wishes to attend, please give your name to Mr. McConnell to be placed on the security list for the courthouse.
February 15: Mock Trial beat Cultural Academy today 55-49. DM played the role of the plaintiff. Matt Maxwell covered for Brian DeShong who was out sick. Gordon Wilford was best attorney and Mason Grahame was best witness.
The team will now advance to the elimination rounds. The top 16 teams from Calvert, St. Mary's, Charles and Prince George's will compete for the championship for the 7th Judcial Circuit. If we prevail we will continue to compete against other regions.
February 8: The Mock Trial team won 52-51 against Duval, playing the role of defense. The judge awarded Darold Holland '11 the best attorney designation. The opposing coach gave Matthew Maxwell '11 the best attorney designation and Andrew Rust '14 the best witness designation. The team will meet Cultural Academy next Tuesday at DeMatha, assuming the role of plaintiff.
February 3:The Mock Trial team beat Frederick Douglas last Thursday 49 to 42, playing the role of Plaintiff for the first time. Gordon Wilford was recognized as the best attorney and Chad Johnson was the best witness. To date, the DeMatha Mock Trial team is the highest scoring team in their region.
January 26: The DeMatha Mock Trial team, playing the role of the defense, beat McNamara 48-43 in yesterday's match. Our next match is next Thursday at DeMatha against Fredrick Douglas. We will be the plaintiff.
2010 Play Off Results
March 4: DeMatha’s Mock Trial team beat McDonough convincingly 44-29 in the first of the elimination rounds.
March 11: DeMatha, playing the role of prosecution, prevailed onver Laurel in a very close match, 52-50. Laurel's team is coached by DeMatha alumnus Joe Rooney ’76. The team, one of 36 at the beginning of the season, is one of the final 8 teams for the 7th Judicial Circuit that comprises Calvert, Charles, St. Mary's and Prince George’s. The team will play in the next round on Tuesday, March 16.
The team will be invited to a ceremony on March 23 at the courhouse for having reached the final four of the 7th Judicial Circuit.
2009 Play Off Results:
MARCH 18: The DeMatha Mock Trial team defeated Leonardtown High School last Thursday in the first round at the Prince George's County Courthouse. Today, however, the team lost, 56 to 52, to St. Mary's Ryken. Andrew Widman was best defense attorney and Rod Washington was best defense witness. Mr. Charlie Kenny '68, alumni moderator, wrote "Our guys were tough. The judge was the best Mock Trial judge we have had in years and we lost to a good team. Our team progressed significantly from the start of the season. We will do it next year."
Preliminary Round Results:
FEBRUARY 26: Brandon Miles was best witness and Andrew Ettinger was best attorney, but the Mock Trial team lost to Northwestern, 45-41.
FEBRUARY 18: Mock Trial remains undefeated, beating Oxon Hill 51-48. George Scott again took the honors as Attorney of the Match, and Matthew Maxwell was named the All Star Witness.
FEBRUARY 10: Mock Trial defeated McNamara, 54-41. George Scott was the Attorney of the Match, and Rod Washington was the Witness of the Match. DeMatha represented the Defense.
FEBRUARY 5: Mock Trial defeated Laurel, 50-48. Andrew Ettinger was named Attorney of the Match, and Alex Busch was named Witness of the Match. DeMatha represented the Plaintiff.
