BSU Receives Governor's Volunteer Service Award
Posted: April 27, 2009
Members of the Black Student Union (BSU) with moderator Mr. Vaughn Holsey received a 2009 Governor's Volunteer Service Award in the Youth Group division at a ceremony in Annapolis on April 20.
The BSU was nominated by the City of Hyattsville for their participation in a number of City-sponsored activities. From the Award Ceremony:
Faculty sponsor Mr. Holsey partnered with the City of Hyattsville Office of Volunteer Services to expand student service learning opportunities for his students. The Union has recorded over 450 hours of service. One of their most recent projects was with the First Methodist Church of Hyattsville. The church community had struggled for years to keep their property clean due to illegal dumping. The BSU removed all trash, sending the message that this kind of activity is no longer to be tolerated in that area. They have also worked with the Capital Area Food Bank with their annual "Stuff-A-Truck" event. Mr. Holsey and the Black Student Union are a valuable resource to their community.
