    Here is the latest news from DeMatha



    This is a big weekend for the school! We hope you are planning to attend the Open House for the New Convocation Center this Saturday from 2-5 p.m. Tour the building, watch the varsity basketball team practice, and have a snack. We will have a lot more about tomorrow's in-house Dedication Ceremony (with Washington Archbishop Donald Wuerl) next week.



    The Academic Quiz Bowl team will tape their play-off match against Blake and Wootton High Schools this Saturday at Channel 4. Would you like to cheer the Stags on in person? Arrive at Channel 4 by 2:30 p.m. Go Stags!



    Congratulations to the Mock Trial Team, which has advanced to the elimination rounds for this year's competition. The team will play the role of defense today against McDonough. The match will be held at the courthouse in Upper Marlboro. Attorney Charlie Kenny ’68, the advisor, noted that this will be their first time appearing for the defense.



    Just announced! The guest speaker for this year's annual Science Expo Dinner will be Dr. James B. Garvin, Chief Scientist for the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. Tickets for the dinner on March 18 at 6:30 PM are now available in the main office ($10 for students, and $15 for adults).



    The USDA sponsors an Ag-Discovery outreach program at Maryland to help students learn about careers in animal science, veterinary medicine, agribusiness and plant pathology. Details.



    The DeMatha Players present "Picasso at the Lapin Agile" A Play by Steve Martin.

    Prayer requests:

    - Please keep Tom Jensen ’00 in your prayers. Tom, a Prince George’s County police officer, was critically injured in a car accident responding to a call Saturday morning.

    - Austin Freeman '07, who has been having a sensational year for Georgetown, was just diagnosed with diabetes. We wish Austin well. He is expected to resume playing.

    - Please continue to keep all our Military in harms way in your prayers



    In Memoriam


    Donald McBride, grandfather of Erik McBride-Dore. Viewing at the Evans FH in Bowie on Saturday from 11-1pm. The Funeral Service will begin at 1pm.

    Michael Messier, brother of Dick Messier, faculty member and coach. Mr. Messier's brother died in a tragic car accident last week. Michael Messier was a well-known high school coach like his brother

    Pamela LaLumiere, sister-in-law of Tim Miller ‘80 and aunt of Ryan LaLumiere '96



    Athletics


    The varsity basketball team will play Paul VI at 7 tonight at DeMatha in a quarterfinal WCAC Playoff Game. This will be the final varsity game in the Wootten Gym.

    If DeMatha wins, the team will play on Sunday at 4pm at American University. The championship game is Monday night at 8 at AU. All games can be heard here.

    As you know, the final regular season game was played in the Wootten Gym last week amid much hoopla. Here are two video reports from the game.

    The Prep hockey team fought hard but fell to Gonzaga last week in the league championship game by a 3-2 score. Read more.



    DeMatha had three wrestlers place at the National Preps tournament at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania last weekend. Each has earned the title of 'All-American.' Sophomore Tito Onyekweli took 4th in the 112 pound weight class. Freshman Shane Cockerille took 7th in the 171lbs. weight class. Pat Prada finished his stellar high school senior season with a second National Preps All-American title. Pat took 2nd in the 125lbs weight class. He received his first National Preps title last season with a 3rd place finish in the 119lbs weight class.



    The varsity swim team finished second in the area wide Metros Competition last weekend.



    Alumni News Notes


    - Quentin Deadrick (OG/DE) has received a football scholarship to West Virginia State University. Junior Delonte Morton (RB) has committed to Maryland.

    - Michael Billings ’00 graduated in May 2009, from the University of Maryland Dental School as a D.D.S. and is currently practicing in Bowie and Owings MD.

    - Two DeMatha alums are prominently featured on the St. John’s University website. Senior Leonard L. Hamlin Jr. ’06, who completed the Pre-MBA Leadership Program at Yale last summer, is profiled here. And Gavin Buckley ’06, a lacrosse co-captain and a member of the President’s Society, is featured here.

    - The latest edition of Dime Magazine (the All-Star issue with Kobe Bryant on the cover) had a feature on our team, specifically their training. Faculty member and training coach Elijah Brooks '02 gets special mention.

    - Last December, we did a story about Mike McQuillan '69 and his efforts to solve the 1974 murder of Eileen Kelly, sister of Sean '78 and Pat '82. Channel 4 in DC did a story on this last night and the report will air again at 4 this afternoon. Here is a link to view the story.

    - With the Oscar ceremony coming up, Dr. Thomas Hibbs '78 wrote this essay on recent movies, religion and film.

    - The 2010 DM 2K10 Football Coaches clinic will be held on March 6th at DeMatha High School. The clinic will feature Keynote speaker Kirk Ferentz Head Football Coach University of Iowa, other top college, high school and youth coaches will also be featured.
