The 5th Annual Student, Alumni, Faculty and Parent Art Show Opens
Although the Fifth Annual Art Show officially began with an after school reception on April 29, quite a few studnets, teachers, and staff members could already be seen viewing the show as soon as the exhibit appeared on the third floor of the Convocation Center.
Take a Tour of the Show in the Art Show Photo Gallery
At the reception, parents, families, students, alumni and friends of DeMatha were greeted with a dazzling display of talent produced by students of Ms. Madison, Mr. Holsey and Mr. Potskowski. Outstanding photography and a variety of art mediums gave new life to the walls and hallways on the top floor of the new building.
Sue and Buddy Leatherwood, who have attended various art shows over the past several years, shared up their experience. "The Art and Photography Exhibit," they wrote, "was truly impressive. The Exhibit reflected very well on the talent of the students and the high quality and dedication of the teaching staff. The Photography Exhibit was a rare treat to see the world through the students' lenses and to discover beauty, surprises and so many new perspectives. It is another example of why DeMatha is held in high regard and is considered one of the best high schools in the Maryland area."
The Exhibit will remain on display until the end of the year. All are welcome.
DeMatha Students Finalists in Photo Contest
Congratulations to two outstanding photographers, Marcus Flores '09 and Patrick Prada '10, and their photography teacher Mr. Edward Potskowski. They were selected as finalists and prize winners in the contest at a special reception at the Washington Post on Saturday, November 15th.
The Washington Post and Foto Week DC co-sponsored the first Youth Photo Contest for the Virginia, DC, Maryland area. The judges for the photo contest were Jay Sumner, Photo Editor of National Geographic Kids Magazine, and Joe Elbert, former Director of Photography for the Washington Post. For the first photo contest, a few hundred pictures were expected to be judged; however, everyone was stunned when nearly 2000 photos were submitted for the contest. Only 12 photos were selected as finalists for the high school division.
Marcus Flores’ picture was a striking posterization of the Empire State Building while Patrick Prada’s photo was a one of a kind photograph of a soccer player landing on her face with her legs up in the air. Both students received digital cameras as a prize. The photos are currently on display at the Washington Post Building lobby gallery and they will later be part of an exhibit at the Foto Week Gallery in Georgetown and the National Geographic Society Headquarters
